In plain English: Red, painful pimples that keep coming back? Benzoyl peroxide kills the bacteria behind them. It works fast, it’s cheap, and one warning: it bleaches towels.
Benzoyl peroxide releases oxygen inside the pore, killing Cutibacterium acnes, the bacteria involved in inflamed acne. Unlike antibiotics, bacteria do not develop resistance to it, which is why dermatologists often include it in combination treatments.
What it does
- Kills acne bacteria quickly.
- Reduces inflamed pimples and pustules.
- Mildly exfoliates, helping prevent clogged pores.
How to use it
Apply a thin layer of 2.5% gel to the whole acne-prone area at night, every other night for the first two weeks, then nightly if tolerated. Moisturise afterwards. Short contact therapy (rinse off after 5 to 10 minutes) reduces irritation.
Who should use it
Anyone with red, inflamed acne. Pair it with salicylic acid for blackheads; see Salicylic Acid vs Benzoyl Peroxide.

Frequently asked questions
Is 10% benzoyl peroxide better than 2.5%?
Studies have found 2.5% to be comparably effective for many people, with far less dryness and irritation. Start low.
Can I use it as a spot treatment?
You can, but it works best as a thin layer across the whole acne-prone area, because it prevents new pimples from forming.
